Man You Boast That You Are Free

MAN, YOU BOAST

   THAT YOU ARE FREE

Music: Peter Agnos

Words adapted from J. R. Lowell, 1860

Hey man, though you boast that you

  are free, so free, brave and true,

If there breathes on earth a slave

  are you really free and brave?

If you cannot feel the chain

  when it works a brother’s pain,

Are you not a slave indeed,

  a low slave unfit to be freed?

Yes, Yes, Yes I Understand;

Brothers, Sisters Take My Hand. (2x)

Is true freedom just to break

  shackles for our own dear sake,

And with hardened minds forget

  that we owe mankind a debt?

No! True freedom is to wear

  all the chains our brothers bear

And with heart and hand to be

  fighting to make others free.

Yes Yes, Yes I Understand;

Brothers, Sisters Take My Hand. (2x)

You will be free when you can speak

  for the fallen and the weak;

You will be free when you dare choose

  hatred, scoffing and abuse

Rather than in silence, shrink

  from the truth you can but think.

You’ll stay free when you will fight

  for the people, truth and right.

Yes, Yes, Yes I Understand;

Brothers, Sisters Take My Hand.  (2x)
